So many people mistake this call for being a genius play. It’s not a particularily bad play either though — allow me to explain:

  • Gus knows his own table image. People re-raise him quite often.
  • Gus is putting Antionio Esfandiari on a big hand, but not a gigantic pair. Against Gus, Antionio probably wouldn’t shove with AA/KK/QQ.
  • The pot is $550k. He’s getting 2.5/1 on his money, and he could be anything from a big underdog against an overpair or a dominated hand– or it could be a flip against an underpair or one over and one under.

It’s a guess — it’s a guess I wouldn’t make… But Gus made it, and it payed off.
